Visit to Fresh and Local CSA - 6 Hives!

I drove out to Shepherdstown, West Virginia this morning to do a site visit of our best customer, Fresh and Local CSA.  This 40 acres farm provides naturally raised produce to members on a weekly basis throughout the growing season.  Please visit their website and become a member.  They have convenient locations on the District and metro area to pick up your produce weekly and the pricing is very reasonable.  Our bees should improve upon their yields, so the price will be a bargain!

I arrived a little early so I drove into the center of town to get a coffee.  I had never been to Shepherdstown and it is a beautiful and historic village.  It was only 75 minutes from Georgetown so a very easy trip.  None of the restaurants were open that early but I think a day trip to Harper's Ferry and then lunch in Shepherdstown is in my future.

Next stop, the CSA.  Allan Balliett is the owner of the CSA and is passionate about local food, heirloom vegetables, and natural methods of raising his produce, livestock, and fruits.

We surveyed his site for the best location for his hives and we found the perfect area next to a stream and in the treeline adjacent to his largest field.

Although he was not expecting it, Allan was pleased to be surprised by the two (of six) hives I had brought along.  We set them up in their permanent home, and strapped them down.

The cattle across the street were curious about our activity!
