EPA Rally in Washington Today

Well, not really a rally, more of a small gathering of like-minded folks focused on the the use of neonicotinoid pesticides organized by the Center For Food Safety.  I got a ton of hits on the blog page giving notice of the rally,  but alas the attendance was sparse.  More folks have shown for some local bee meet-ups than at this event.  Given the mid-day schedule and the downtown location it may have been difficult to rally the troops.

We did have a few notable speakers show:

Exhibit I, former presidential candidate Dennis Kucinich.

More fun for us beekeepers was rock star David Hackenberg:
Dave was the first to identify the problem of colony collapse disorder, unfortunately in his own hives, and raise the alarm on the problem, while helping solve its mystery.  Dave has been featured in many of the recent beekeeping documentaries including Vanishing of the Bees and Queen of the Sun.

  1. I was there and tried to help spread the word :) I found the event via Facebook, and when I did a google search, also saw a Craigslist posting. I was told they may do another rally in the spring and if so, maybe we just need to pollinate the area a month or so in advance with announcements in newsletters, free radio PSAs, newspapers, etc. It was great being there with everyone and getting to meet some awesome people!

  2. I think you may have been the one I took a picture of with that guy's cell phone!

  3. Yeah, it was mostly that it was in the middle of my workday that it didn't work for me :(.
